According to historical records, in 1673 AD, Xu Ahua, a fisherman from Fujian, was swept ashore in Cijin by a hurricane and settled there. He subsequently invited six fellow villagers and brought a branch spirit of Mazu from Meizhou to Taiwan, making it the first Mazu temple in Taiwan and the oldest temple in Kaohsiung.
