Ciaotou Old Street (Yu Dengfa's Former Residence). Mr. Yu Dengfa, a self-made man, was born in Kaohsiung in 1904 as the son of a farmer. In 1979, Yu Dengfa was arrested by intelligence agencies in connection with the spy Wu Taian incident and sentenced to eight years in prison. Non-KMT figures from all over Taiwan gathered at Yu Dengfa's old home in Ciaotou to protest the Kuomintang government's political persecution. This was the first large-scale protest demonstration during the Kuomintang's rule in Taiwan, known as the "Ciaotou Incident." In December of the same year, the Kaohsiung Incident occurred. To commemorate this maverick pioneer of Taiwanese democracy, who dared to argue with the ruling authorities throughout his life, his former residence has been renovated and opened to the public. The exhibition area is approximately 100 ping. The first floor displays photographs and belongings of the elder Mr. Yu, highlighting his character of defying power and speaking for the people, as well as the political environment that necessitated resistance at the time. The second floor presents the "Ciaotou Incident," which holds significant meaning in Taiwan's democratic history, along with a timeline of Mr. Yu's major life events and an e-book of historical materials. Remembering our ancestors and understanding past history allows us to realize that democracy was hard-won and is worthy of deep thought and cherishing by future generations.
