There are 27 mud volcano activities worldwide. Within Shenshui Village in Yanchao District, Shenshui Farm and Ranch is the most developed area for mud volcano terrain in Taiwan, covering an area of 3.88 hectares. To protect this unique landscape, the Council of Agriculture began to designate this area as the "Wushanding Mud Volcanoes Nature Reserve" in 1992. Mud volcanoes are formed by the faulting and fracturing of the Qishan Fault beneath the Earth's crust, allowing water to seep underground and mix with mudstone to form mud slurry. High-pressure gas then erupts the mud slurry to the surface along the fissures, accumulating to form mud volcanoes. This area has three conical mud volcanoes, the tallest reaching 3.5 meters with a slope of about 50 degrees, forming a typical eruption cone. It erupts every few seconds, with thick mud flowing down the cone, forming tongue-shaped mud flows that can reach a diameter of 70 meters. Eruptions of mud and gas are frequent, and these gases can often be ignited or burn spontaneously. For educational and academic purposes, entry into the nature reserve requires prior completion of an application form, allowing observation of precious badlands topography, mud volcanoes, and natural ecosystems.
