From the 1970s to the 2000s, the middle reaches of the Erren River were a gathering place for factories specializing in waste metal recycling and refining. The upper reaches also had pig farms and poultry farms, causing the Erren River's water to be foul-smelling and black, with pollution levels reaching first in Taiwan. Since vigorous remediation efforts began in 2001, the Erren River has gradually regained its vitality in recent years. The district office has established two observation decks, Wapu and Changlu, and a waterfront park within the boundaries of Alian District. There are also areas for observing wild small plants, a campsite, and an artificial lake. In addition to wooden boardwalks, the riverbanks have largely retained their original natural appearance. Aquatic plants provide habitats for birds and other flora and fauna. Overlooking the panoramic view of the Erren River, lush greenery and tranquil scenery are all within sight. The Erren River Waterfront Park is an excellent location for family outings and birdwatching, and it is also the best testament to ecological restoration.
