Basalt and coral rock are sun-dried to remove impurities. Large stones are used as the foundation and small stones as filler during stacking. No cement or lime is used during the stacking process; the edges of the stones are used as interlocking joints, forming a stable windbreak wall. Although this construction method may not appear refined, it can withstand the strong northeast monsoon. Crops within the Cai Zhai are planted with pumpkins, Penghu melons, and Penghu vegetables in spring and summer.
