Both the larger and smaller islands are composed of basalt, surrounded by steep cliffs, making them difficult to climb. The larger Mao Islet is a giant dike emerging from the surface, with a towering terrain, reaching a maximum elevation of about 70 to 79 meters, making it the highest point in the Penghu Islands. The larger Mao Islet features well-developed coastal erosion landforms, with many sea caves around it, and a giant sea arch on the northern sea cliff; a coastal erosion platform is exposed on the east side during low tide, with numerous potholes on the platform. The smaller Mao Islet is located east of the larger Mao Islet, with even steeper terrain, and a rocky ridge composed of volcanic agglomerate connects the two islands during low tide. There is a saying among the people of Penghu: 'Bird Islet has no birds, Mao Islet has no cats.' Mao Islet is named for its appearance resembling two crouching cats, not for having many cats, and it is an uninhabited island. However, it is a habitat for a large number of migratory birds. In the summer, terns choose the remote and treacherous Mao Islet for breeding, mainly the Bridled Tern and the Black-naped Tern, with approximately 3 of each species annually.
