One legend says that during the Kangxi era of the Qing Dynasty, a merchant ship sailing through the Houmen sea area near Tongliang unfortunately encountered a shipwreck. Only a seedling survived and drifted to the coast of Tongliang with the tide. The villagers of Tongliang retrieved it and planted it in front of the temple. Based on this, the Tongliang ancient banyan tree may be over 300 years old. Another legend suggests that the Tongliang ancient banyan tree may only be 200 years old. According to Chinese planting customs, trees are usually planted after the temple is completed. Looking at the history of Baoan Temple's establishment, which is about 200 years ago, the Tongliang ancient banyan tree might be 100 years younger than the legend.
