Yu-weng Island Lighthouse. Yu-weng Island Lighthouse is located on the high ground at the southwestern end of Xiyu, belonging to Wai'an Village, Xiyu Township. Xiyu Island has an area of 17.8380 square kilometers and an altitude of about 52 meters. It stands alongside Penghu Main Island and Baisha Island, making it one of the three major islands in the Penghu archipelago. Yu-weng Island is Xiyu. The distinction in names arises because the Portuguese first marked it as 'Yu-weng Island' on nautical charts. Subsequently, Dutch and Japanese military maps also used the translated name 'Yu-weng Island.' However, the early settlers have always called it 'Xiyu' or 'Xiyu Tou' since ancient times. Throughout the Qing Dynasty and Japanese colonial periods, it was administratively named Xiyu. As Xiyu is located west of Penghu Main Island, early settlers from the coasts of Fujian and Zhejiang in China used 'Xiyu Tou' as a navigational landmark when sailing through Penghu. The lighthouse was first built in 1778 as a seven-story stone tower named 'Xiyu Tower Light.' In 1875, it was rebuilt into a Western-style structure and named 'Yu-weng Island Lighthouse,' as seen today. In recent years, when it was registered as a historical monument, following the suggestions of the local residents, its official name was changed to 'Xiyu Lighthouse.' The lighthouse stands on granite.
