Hwajai Settlement (Zhongshe Village). Hwajai Settlement is one of the more well-preserved traditional settlements in Penghu. Hwajai Settlement is one of the more well-preserved traditional settlements in Penghu. Han Chinese immigrants arrived here over 300 years ago. The early settlers observed the terrain, with surrounding hills encircling the area like petals around a flower's heart. Thus, they cultivated land and built houses near the center (Shanzaiweitop), giving it the name "Hwajai." Geographically located in the center of the four villages on the main island of Wang'an Township, it was renamed "Zhongshe" Village. Due to the outflow of local population, the ancient houses are increasingly in disrepair. In 2005, the Hwajai villagers established the "Taiwan Hwajai Settlement Ancient House Preservation Association" to draw the government's attention. Subsequently, the Penghu County Government announced it as "Wang'an Hwajai Settlement" and further applied to the Council for Cultural Affairs to register it as an "Important Settlement." Currently, a redevelopment plan is being drafted. Among the ancient houses in Hwajai, the most striking is the Zeng family's ancient house, with its scroll-shaped windows, resembling Microsoft's registered trademark, and the red bricks exposed to form a "Zeng" character-shaped window lattice, like a startup confirmation.
