Donglong Temple, Chaolong Temple, and Fu'an Temple are the three famous temples in Donggang, each with its own main deity. Among them, the Lord Wen of Donglong Temple is an important spiritual anchor for the people of Donggang, closely intertwined with the development of Donggang Township's culture and customs. The "Lord Wen" is also known as "Qian Sui." Legends about the origin of the Lord Wen vary. One story says that Wen Hong, who died at sea while protecting Emperor Taizong of Tang, is revered by the common people as a sea god or a plague god, appointed by the Jade Emperor to patrol on behalf of heaven. Legend has it that every three years, Lord Wen returns to Donggang, giving rise to the triennial "Donggang Welcoming the King Peace Festival." To welcome the Lord Wen's arrival, almost all residents of Donggang Township mobilize, following ancient methods to meticulously craft and paint the "Wang Jiao/Wang Chuan" (ritualistic boat for welcoming/sending off the King). The eight-day Welcoming the King Peace Festival, from welcoming the King, parading through the town, feasting the King, to sending off the King, is filled with awe-inspiring rituals, lively traditional performances, deafening firecrackers, and devout worshippers throughout Donggang Township. If you have the opportunity to visit Donggang during the "Donggang Welcoming the King Peace Festival," be sure to stop and participate in this grand event to experience the reverence for Lord Wen and the local cultural passion of Donggang. The main deity of Donggang Donglong Temple, Lord Wen, was named Hong, with the courtesy name Dexiu. He was born in the Sui Dynasty, from Baima Lane, Licheng County, Jinan Prefecture, Shandong. He lived during the Zhenguan era of the Tang Dynasty, when Emperor Li Shimin traveled incognito.
