Mudan Reservoir is currently the most expensive reservoir in Taiwan, with a grand scale of construction. Built with cobblestones, Mudan Reservoir was established to solve the agricultural water needs of the people in southern Pingtung and the tourism industry of the Hengchun Peninsula. Completed and commissioned in 1995, its dam is 445 meters long and 145 meters high, collecting water from the Runeng and Mudan streams in the upper reaches of the Four Streams. Its total storage capacity is approximately 31.19 million tons, enough to meet all the water needs of the Hengchun Peninsula until 2021. The main body of the dam includes the intake, the dam itself, and the spillway. The scale is magnificent. Visitors who reach the reservoir can directly ascend to the dam crest to admire the blue sea, blue sky, and green mountains surrounding the watershed, which is truly refreshing. The majestic spillway further evokes the greatness of this grand construction project. On the way to Mudan Reservoir, you will also appreciate traditional indigenous architecture and villages, as well as several restaurants offering Paiwanese cuisine. If you have time, you might want to try the uniquely flavored indigenous dishes! (Tentative)
