For nearly eighty years, Taiwan Power Company (Taipower) has successively built numerous power plants here, including Daguan, Jugong, Minghu, Mingtan, and Shuili, as well as the Minghu and Mingtan reservoirs specifically for pumped-storage hydroelectricity. The high density of power plants and reservoirs near Checheng is rarely seen globally. Sun Moon Lake has a total installed capacity of 2,768.3 megawatts, accounting for 62% of Taiwan's total hydroelectric power generation. Its advantage of possessing both conventional and pumped-storage hydroelectric resources makes it an ideal location for promoting energy conservation, carbon reduction, and renewable energy, as well as a highly educational tourist destination. It utilizes the water released from the Sun Moon Lake First Power Station, channeling it through a 4,409-meter-long water tunnel, combining it with the water from Tonggui Creek, and storing it in the Tonggui regulating pond.
