Central Dam Power Plant and Minghu Reservoir: The Power Heart and Ecological Treasure of Sun Moon Lake Located in Shuili Township, Nantou County, Central Dam Power Plant is an important milestone in Taiwan's power development history. It has two distinct powerhouses: The first Central Dam Power Plant, built in 1918 during the Japanese colonial era, is a conventional hydroelectric power plant. It ceased operations due to Allied bombing during World War II and only resumed power supply in 1946. The second Central Dam Power Plant is the first pumped-storage power plant built by Taiwan Power Company. Construction began in 1980 and was completed in 1985, giving Sun Moon Lake Taiwan's most complex reservoir power generation system. The operating principle of the second Central Dam Power Plant is unique and efficient: it uses Sun Moon Lake as the upper reservoir and builds a dam on the Shuili River to form Minghu Reservoir as the lower reservoir. Minghu Reservoir, located in Mingtan Village, Shuili Township, was completed in August 1985. Its lake surface is approximately four kilometers long and wide. It is not only Taiwan's first pumped-storage power plant but also the first pumped-storage power plant in Asia. This power plant utilizes off-peak electricity at night to pump water from Minghu Reservoir to Sun Moon Lake for storage. During peak electricity demand in the daytime, the water is released to generate electricity, converting low-value electricity into high-value electricity, demonstrating a high degree of environmental consciousness. In recent years, in response to the rapid development of solar power, the dispatching mode of the second Central Dam Power Plant has also changed: from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM daily.
