Year Ladder Trail. Before the Sun Moon Lake Ring Road was built, visitors had to take a boat to the pier below the Wenwu Temple and then climb a steep section of stairs to worship and sightsee. It was quite arduous, so the stairs were known as the "Stairway to Heaven" in the early years. Later, after the completion of the Ring Road, it was no longer difficult for tourists to reach the Wenwu Temple, and the stairs below the temple were gradually forgotten. After renovation by the Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area Administration, the stairs, a slope of about 200 meters in length, have 366 steps, symbolizing the 366 days of a year (leap year). Along the way, platforms are provided for rest on the first day of each month. Additionally, information related to the twenty-four solar terms is carved on both sides of the stairs, allowing visitors to learn about traditional Chinese folk culture while slowly climbing. Thus, the stairs are called the "Wenwu Temple Year Ladder" or "Year Ladder Trail." Walking on the Year Ladder Trail offers an interesting experience: each step is engraved with a date and the names of famous Chinese and foreign figures born on that day. You can look for which celebrity shares your birthday! Searching as you walk, the 366 steps won't feel arduous.
