Wuchang Temple is located in Jiji Township, Nantou County. It is an important center of faith for the local community, primarily worshipping the Supreme Emperor of the Dark Heaven (Beiji Xuantianshangdi). The history of Wuchang Temple can be traced back to the Japanese colonial era, in the 36th year of Meiji (1903), when local gentry in Jiji raised funds to sculpt a statue of Xuantianshangdi, which was a branch from the Nanyan Palace of Wudang Mountain in Hubei, China. The temple was officially established in 1923. In 1990, local individuals donated land for expansion, and construction began in 1991. Shortly after its completion in 1999, the temple was struck by the 921 earthquake, causing most of the structure to collapse. However, the statue was miraculously undamaged due to the rescue efforts of devotees. The ruins of the old temple have been preserved as a memorial to the earthquake disaster, now known as the 'Old Wuchang Temple Ruins.' In 2022, it was registered as a national cultural asset, becoming the only preserved 921 earthquake ruin building in Jiji Township, possessing both educational and cultural value. The new temple completed its consecration ceremony on October 12, 2013, and continues to serve as the local center of faith. Wuchang Temple is not only a major religious site but also attracts many visitors due to its unique historical background and status as an earthquake ruin. It is said that the beard of the Xuantianshangdi statue grows year by year, symbolizing the continuation of faith and strength, and serving as a symbol of spiritual solace for the local people. Nearby Wuchang Temple are the famous Zhejiang Taishun Covered Bridge and a temple dedicated to the Matchmaker God (Yuelao), which visitors can explore together to experience the richness of Jiji.
