Legend has it that when the Japanese were building the hydroelectric power project at Sun Moon Lake, local residents often saw a group of sparkling things flying around in the sky. It is said that these were the 'Longzaiyin' living at the bottom of the lake, who were disturbed by the construction and migrated towards Puli. This is the place where people first discovered the 'Longzaiyin', hence the name 'Jianjing' (meaning 'seeing crystals'). In modern scientific terms, on sunny days, the sunlight reflects off the lake's surface, creating shimmering, golden light. Especially from the location of the Tudigong temple, the water appears sparkling, thus giving it the name 'Jianjing'.
