At that time, in order to increase Sun Moon Lake's storage capacity and improve power generation efficiency, plans were made to build Shuishe Dam in the Shuishe valley. Together with Toushe Dam in the southwest, it intercepted water sources, transforming Sun Moon Lake from a natural lake into a reservoir. The lake area expanded, and the water level rose by over 25 meters, connecting the previously separated Ritan (Sun) and Yuelan (Moon) to form today's vast lake surface. The dam body is several hundred meters long, and the dam crest features a boardwalk about 100 to 200 meters long. The cycling path is an important section of the Sun Moon Lake cycling route, offering a 180-degree panoramic view of the lake and mountains, making it a popular spot for many tourists to stop and take photos. The cycling path section is a wooden boardwalk, adjacent to the lake surface. It is recommended to slow down and walk your bike to ensure safety. At the bottom end of Shuishe Dam, there is a "Monument to the Martyrs" commemorating the Taiwanese workers who died during the Sun Moon Lake hydroelectric power project from 1931 to 1934. The monument is inscribed with the names and detailed stories of many martyrs, reminding people of the hardships and contributions of the project at that time.
