History and Usage Past Usage The Checheng Mu-Storage Pond, also known as the Fir Pond, was built during the period when Checheng's timber industry flourished. At that time, large quantities of logs were transported from the mountains to Checheng, where they were lifted by overhead cranes and submerged in the pond. The purpose of this was to release the wood resin, reduce the growth of bacteria and mold, and extend the shelf life of the timber. The submerged logs were also less prone to cracking and deformation, and easier to process. Overhead Crane Features The overhead cranes used at the time were built with Taiwanese cypress wood and had a maximum lifting capacity of 11 to 13 tons, making them an important symbol of the local forestry industry. After restoration, the overhead crane has become a spiritual landmark of Checheng. Present Appearance Ecology and Landscape With the decline of the timber industry, the mu-storage pond has been transformed into an ecological pond. A lakeside trail has been planned along the pond, with trees such as maple, camphor, bald cypress, and orchid trees planted along the way. Surrounded by mountains, the lake's surface sparkles, reflecting the changing colors of the bald cypress and the mountains, creating a picturesque scene.
