Xi. Bookstore (Toufenpu Cultural Studio). Xi. "Xi. Bookstore" (Toufenpu Cultural Studio) is an independent bookstore located in Pingtung City. Its founders, Xu Xiao-qing and Peng Qiao-ru, graduated from the Graduate Institute of Hakka Culture at National Kaohsiung Normal University, specializing in ethnic relations, folk beliefs, and food culture research. In addition to social science books, the bookstore also features a food research room established based on their expertise in food culture.
Xi. Bookstore is situated in the Shengli Star Village Creative Life Park in Pingtung City – the largest, most numerous, and most complete collection of Japanese military officer residences in Taiwan. In 1927, the Japanese Army's 8th Air Regiment was stationed in Pingtung and constructed official residences. Later, after the Republic of China government relocated to Taiwan, military officers and their families moved into this area, blending the strong culture of military dependents' villages into the Japanese-style architecture.
In recent years, the Pingtung County Government has actively renovated the residential spaces, gradually forming the current settlement of Shengli Star Village. In addition to preserving the characteristic architecture that has continued since the Japanese colonial era, many local arts, cultural, and culinary businesses have been invited to move in, bringing more vitality to Shengli Star Village and providing a place for Pingtung's arts and cultural workers to return home.
The "Xi. Bookstore" team was founded in 2015. When they moved into Shengli Star Village, the local government was facing financial difficulties, and only some buildings in the park had been renovated. At that time, there were still many military dependents' villages...
