Located in Lukang, Changhua, Chang Yuan Hospital is near the First Market, situated at the intersection of Zhongshan Road and Minzu Road. It has stood tall through the years, a testament to time. This old house was once the residence and clinic of the renowned local doctor, Xu Du, and the starting point for realist photographer Xu Cangze's gaze upon his homeland. The street house, a blend of old and new, integrating Chinese, Japanese, and Western styles, not only sculpts the developmental texture of the ancient town but also carries the Xu family's vision and integrity. The story began in 1920 when Xu Liang, a general store owner, purchased this old house, transforming it into the family's residence, thus beginning the Xu family's century-long guardianship of Lukang's streetscape. In 1925, Xu Du, Xu Liang's son, returned after completing his studies and opened 'Chang Yuan Hospital' in the old house. This not only marked the modernization of medical care in the Lukang area but also embodied the characteristics of local clinics at the time, integrating medical, residential, and social functions. Xu Du, who graduated first in his class from Taichung Middle School (now Taichung First Senior High School) and was admitted to the School of Medicine, Government-General of Taiwan, not only practiced at Chang Yuan Hospital but also often rode Lukang's first motorcycle through the alleys to care for patients nearby. He is remembered by the townsfolk as 'Immortal Xu Du.' His broad interests, including photography and Western music, also introduced modern lifestyles to the area. This avant-garde spirit is also reflected in the building's design.
