Huwei Jianguo Villages 1 and 2 are a cluster of settlements in Yunlin County, covering an area of up to 30 hectares. It is currently the only preserved rural-style military village in Taiwan. It has gone through the Qing Dynasty rural period, WWII Japanese military training base barracks, and post-war Air Force military dependents village. Currently, there are still many WWII Japanese military ruins and traces of military village life in the village, such as air-raid shelters, Japanese military turning circles, repair trenches, and water conservancy facilities. Each historical period has different histories and memories, and the diverse traces of different eras can be seen from the existing ruins and structures. The characteristics are presented by different eras: 1. Rural Period (-1943): The predecessor of Huwei Jianguo Military Dependents Village was an old rural village in the local area. Houbiliao (now Huwei Jianguo Village 1) and Zhuweizi (now Huwei Jianguo Village 2) can be found on Qing Dynasty maps. In the autumn of 1943, due to the urgent need for troop training, the Japanese military forced the relocation of Houbiliao and Zhuweizi to build Japanese barracks. The rural residents carried their bamboo houses away from their homes at night to start a new life elsewhere. The story of forced relocation is a common memory for residents near the military village. The current rural landscape of the village belongs to the rural period. 2.
