San Yu Bookstore. San Yu Bookstore, Kaohsiung's first independent bookstore, is housed in a post-war townhouse (fan-cuo), the most representative type of its era. It was once a guava orchard. After Zhongzheng Road was developed, it became one of the first buildings in the area, and it has been perfectly preserved to this day. It currently operates a physical store, a member website, an e-newsletter, print publications, and a podcast program. It reaches readers of different backgrounds and age groups through Facebook, LINE, Instagram, and Plurk. In 2024, its Facebook page had over 70,000 followers and over 350,000 total views, while its Instagram had over 9,000 followers and over 280,000 total views. On average, it hosts hundreds of events annually, presented in various formats including lectures, exhibitions, markets, and concerts. It addresses a wide range of issues such as editorial publishing, mother tongue promotion, local history and culture, environmental protection, gender equality, and political situations. Upholding the belief that "minority is not small," it provides a platform for exposure and exchange for diverse voices and creative forms from around the world, advocating for diversity and equality. Some examples and detailed content will be discussed later. (1) Promotion of independent publications: It strives to become the space with the most comprehensive collection of "Zines" in the Kaohsiung area. Many creators, before gaining fame, expanded their market through independent publishing, such as the artist who illustrated book covers for Haruki Murakami, known for their delicate and exquisite style.
