Nearly 300 years ago, it began to form a village settlement from the "Jianji Road Old Street," and the street names themselves reveal the original intention of crossing the ocean to cultivate the land and the profound meaning of its naming. "Chaozhou" is one of the few places that retains its mainland Chinese place name. Before there were official historical records, this was the sphere of influence of the Makatau indigenous people's Lili community. In 1726 (Qing Dynasty Yongzheng period), pioneers from Chaozhou Prefecture, Guangdong Province, crossed the sea to settle, followed by residents from Fujian Province and other areas of Chaoshan, gradually developing the outline of the present-day settlement. Due to its geographical location, it became the center of the main market for surrounding settlements. During the Japanese colonial period, Pingtung County was an important base for the Japanese Empire's southward expansion policy. Sugar production was one of the main sources of foreign exchange. Chaozhou is located in the central part of the Pingtung Plain. Coupled with the Erfeng Canal irrigation facilities built by Shinpei Torii and the construction of railway transportation, the importance of Chaozhou Township was further enhanced. Due to the southward expansion policy, many engineers were needed, and the Japanese established official residences for engineering positions in Chaozhou. After the war, these were taken over by the Third Engineering Office of the Directorate General of Highways and used as residences for the Directorate General of Highways employees, known as Gonglu New Village. Jianji Road in Chaozhou, locally known as "Old Street," is also where Chaozhou first prospered, with many traditional Chinese medicine shops, doctor's offices, furniture stores, and fabric shops gathered there.
