Site Description: Opened on December 5, 1932, Hayashi Department Store can be said to be a typical representative of the transition from "Japanese style" to "European style." It is not only an important shared memory for citizens, but also a window and a driving force for Taiwan's modernization process at that time. Starting from history, culture is not just about nostalgia; culture needs new elements. Therefore, the accumulation of cultural depth should be the next stage after understanding history. Just as Hayashi Department Store was a driving force and a window for modernization back then, today's Hayashi Department Store has become a driving force and a window for cultural Tainan. Since its reopening in 2014, the Gaocheng Fashion team has diligently operated it, combining cultural creativity and historic architecture. It tells stories by combining characteristic products of Fucheng with the historic building. Since its opening, it has attracted over ten million visitors and has become a dazzling landmark in Tainan! The Tainan Hayashi Department Store, which opened in 1932, was located in the most prosperous commercial district of Tainan at that time, known as "Ginza." It was the second department store in Taiwan, the first in Tainan, and the only department store in Taiwan with a shrine. At that time, Hayashi Department Store was the tallest building in Tainan, so it was also called "Wucenglouzi" (Five-Story Building), representing the most modern style of its era. It was a high-end department store selling luxury imported goods. After World War II, it experienced a long period of closure until June 14, 2014, when it was reopened by Gaocheng Fashion Co., Ltd.
