Penghu has always developed unique characteristics in its villages independently in terms of immigration history, industries, beliefs, and customs. These villages then engage in exchanges as units. The most basic unit of Penghu culture is a village. Recognizable island village cultures include language and lifestyle, beliefs and customs, temples, Cai Zhai (vegetable gardens), harbors, and architectural layouts. In the past, Penghu culture operated on a village-by-village basis, achieving regional cultural subjectivity. Competition, cooperation, and assimilation also occurred at the village level, leading to the development of unique cultures such as Jibei's Cai Zhai culture, Chikan's squid culture, Nanliao's agricultural culture, and the southern Penghu fishing culture. Even marriage customs showed differences, such as Magong's fried jujube culture and Wang'an's fried jujube culture. These village characteristics existed in the past in a micro yet historical manner. With population migration, generational cultural gaps, and regional changes, their independence has ended. Changes in lifestyle and the replacement by popular culture have led to the rapid disappearance of Penghu village cultural content. People in Penghu today do not make fried jujubes for weddings, do not eat dried fish in their daily diet, Cai Zhai are abandoned, and old houses are demolished. Within the next 20 years, our generation will witness the decline of Penghu village culture. This is foreseeable if we do not take action, or if the actions taken are not precise enough.
