Gugang School Western-style Building: A Modern Educational Venue Spontaneously Established by the Community. In the latter half of the 19th century, the Qing Dynasty opened its ports to trade, breaking the long-standing policy of strict control over maritime trade. In the latter half of the 19th century, the Qing Dynasty opened its ports to trade, breaking the long-standing policy of strict control over maritime trade. With the economic prosperity of Southeast Asia under British and Dutch rule, many Fujianese people, who had long struggled to survive due to maritime restrictions, migrated to Southeast Asia in large numbers to seek opportunities, commonly known as 'Luofan' (descending to Nanyang). After many Fujianese overseas Chinese became wealthy, they returned to their hometowns to build grand Western-style houses, remitted funds to support their communities, and established modern education, becoming major drivers of the modernization wave in Fujian in the early 20th century. Kinmen and Gugang were also part of this historical wave. In the early 20th century, many new-style schools on the island, such as Gugang School, Jinshui Elementary School, and Ruiyou School, were spontaneously built by overseas Chinese from Nanyang. Dong Yun-yao was a representative figure of the Gugang overseas Chinese from Nanyang. Upon his return, he rallied villagers and overseas Chinese from Nanyang to establish a new school next to the ancestral temple. In addition to his personal donation, Dong Yun-yao also established an education foundation and purchased property in the Xiamen concession on Gulangyu Island, with the rental income used to fund the school's operations. Gugang School was completed and opened in 1922. The curriculum included subjects such as Mandarin, arithmetic, general knowledge, social studies, science, and music. Teachers came from Gugang, Kinmen, and Fujian. The school also published the 'Jingguang Monthly' to inform overseas Chinese compatriots about the school's progress and to promote fundraising. The spontaneously established Gugang School was later incorporated into the Republic of China's education system. In 1962, it served as the Gugang Village Office and a civilian facility.
