Orchard New House. New House, built in 1934, was once Hsinchu's first department store, founded by the Dai Wu-Shih family. Standing in Hsinchu's old city district, it has been a landmark reflecting contemporary cultural trends in different periods. Due to changes in lifestyle, compared to department stores with parking spaces, New House was no longer the most convenient shopping option. After about 20 years of closure, Orchard (Hong Mei Cultural and Creative) decided to assist in its renovation and reopening. After 4 years of cultural heritage investigation and building renovation, it officially reopened in 2023 as a multi-brand select shop. The restoration and reuse of Orchard New House aim to encourage more people to participate and experience within a space that preserves cultural significance. By integrating with the surrounding Orchard Wind Travel, Orchard Coffee, Orchard Craft Showcase, Orchard Bookstore, and the local neighborhood, it seeks to foster an understanding of Hsinchu's local culture, achieving local regeneration and revitalization of cultural spaces. During the renovation period, Orchard commissioned the "See-Region" team, who wrote "Gong Wan Tang" in Hsinchu, to conduct investigations and collaborated with "Xiong Ben Old House," specialists in renovating old houses. This initiative aimed to gather attention and recognition for cultural assets during the restoration of the old house and to collect operational materials that align with local culture for the space and event design of New House.
