Wan Zuo Xiao Theater. Since its establishment in Taipei's Wanhua District in 2009, One Place Theatre has focused on three main areas: "innovation, inclusivity, and sustainability," through self-produced programs and professional curation. Since moving into Taipei's Wanhua District in 2009, the Wan-Tso Shiao Theater has focused on "innovation, inclusivity, and sustainability." It achieves this by organizing its own programs, curating professional exhibitions, and offering its space for rent to performing arts groups. Based in Wanhua, it cultivates local audiences and collaborates with schools and community organizations to promote performing arts. Through its own productions, theater space, the Bangka International Dance Festival, and the Shiao Theater Artist-in-Residence Program, it connects with domestic and international networks, enriching the diverse performing arts ecosystem.
1. Historic Building Restoration and Reuse Combined with Community Culture
The "Taiwan Sugar Taipei Warehouse Building B," where the Wan-Tso Shiao Theater is located, was originally a sugar warehouse during the Japanese colonial period. It has witnessed the development of the local sugar industry through the years. In 2003, it was designated a municipal historic site by the Taipei City Department of Cultural Affairs. After restoration, it was established as the "Sugar Refinery Cultural Park," and in 2025, it was renamed the "Taipei Sugar Refinery." Its original cultural and historical value was preserved while transforming it into a traditional arts incubation base. The Shiao Theater seized the opportunity of Taipei City's "Old House Cultural Movement Project" to lease and move into the space, transforming it into a professional theater that integrates artistic creation, performance, and training. This not only protects the cultural value of the historic building but also deeply integrates artistic activities with a historical site, becoming a part of the local cultural memory.
