Kinmen Overseas Chinese Township - Wang Qingyun Western-style House 1934. From the late Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China, islanders from Kinmen ventured beyond their ancestral homes to seek livelihoods across the seas. Traces can be found in both Japan and Southeast Asia, but only a few achieved success. Those fortunate enough could return home with remittances to build "Western-style houses" to honor their ancestors. However, a century later, the Western-style houses of the overseas Chinese townships are weathered and in decline. This project proposes to organize relevant historical and cultural guided tours for these houses. Through a systematic curriculum and the integration of resources from experts, scholars, and local cultural workers, a guided tour memory bank will be formed to re-examine the history and culture of Kinmen's overseas Chinese Western-style houses and connect them with Kinmen's tourism development, allowing more seeds to sprout and become disseminators of Kinmen's culture. The Wang Qingyun Western-style House, the base for this application, is a traditional Kinmen building, a 90-year-old five-foot-way Western-style house. It is currently a local creative hub for revitalization and operation. Kinmen is an important area for the development of overseas Chinese culture. In the early days, life in Kinmen was difficult, and many men went to Southeast Asia to develop their careers. After achieving success, they would send money back to Kinmen through remittances. To showcase their success, they would build large houses in their hometowns, introducing architectural features from Southeast Asia into Kinmen. Between 1920 and 1937 was the peak period for the construction of Western-style houses in Kinmen.
