Since marine resources have been depleted and traditional fishing has declined, young people no longer continue the livelihood passed down from generation to generation by their parents, and have left for the cities to find new opportunities. The population has been declining year by year, and small sampans are lonely, left on the sand dunes to be exposed to the wind and sun. Fishing nets are now used to raise poultry, and the entire village has suddenly become deserted. The ancient Minnan-style courtyards have been closed for years, with green moss climbing the mottled walls, and yellow bells climbing out of the stone window lattices, as if announcing that the owners have not returned for many years. In the open spaces between houses, the silver wattle, introduced during the Japanese occupation as firewood, has not been cut for a long time and has formed a tenacious presence like a dense forest. What's more, it has taken root and occupied the land in dilapidated houses. A bunker on the beach, almost buried by sea sand, tells the old story of this place once being an important coastal defense area. Beside it, dark and hard basalt rocks, smoothed by the sea, remain silent, swallowing the stories of the years. This village was more prosperous in the past than it is today, and no one knows what its future will be. At first, the children who went out still remembered their elders at home and would come back to visit every few days. Some also planned to move back and settle down after retirement.
