I haven't been to Shili in a long time, and whenever I think of Shili, I want to cry. In my childhood, the roadside in Shili was adjacent to golden sandy beaches, where the sea and sky merged. Fishing boats were docked on the beach. Standing on the beach was like the lost empire in the Disney cartoon, saying, "It is a part of it, and it is also a part of it" – a space of undifferentiated fusion. But now, huge seawalls and heavy tetrapods have devoured the entire coastline, crushing childhood memories, sealing off dialogue with nature, and creating a lost coast. Now, looking out from the window inside the house, watching the tides ebb and flow, the ever-changing light and shadows on the sea surface, I haven't felt this way in a long time. People who come to see the house always praise my good eye, asking how I found such a wonderful place. Speaking of this always brings back my heartache. I sadly tell you again, there are too many places and coastlines in Penghu more beautiful than this, but what have we done?
