Artist's Home Beneath the Nine-Nine Peaks: Geng Yun Zhai Homestay is located at the Nine-Nine Peaks in Pinglin Village, Caotun Township, Nantou County, also known as "Nine-Nine Sharp Mountain," which got its name from resembling leaping flames from afar, and its unique geological landscape has become Caotun's premier scenic spot. Geng Yun Zhai Homestay is situated here, nestled by mountains and water, with the Wu River winding in front and the Nine-Nine Peaks towering behind, offering a vast and commanding view. The building, with its unconventional, non-rectangular layout, is particularly eye-catching. This was originally the former residence of artists Ke Yaodong and Guo Jiegui. In 1999, the couple commissioned architect Zhao Lixing to design it. The building spans approximately 330 ping (about 1100 square meters). Its exterior resembles an unfolding organic form. Inside, the high ceilings create a visually expansive feeling, and the varying floor levels, created by differences in stair height, give a staggered effect. The house has a fluid layout and ample natural light. They spent the latter half of their lives slowly developing it, living and creating here. Mornings are greeted by birdsong, days are filled with clear skies, and evenings offer breathtaking sunsets. The interior also displays numerous two-dimensional and three-dimensional works by the two artists, making it akin to a small museum where art is visible everywhere. In 2021, their son, Professor Ke Shizhong, reorganized the space, hoping to bring people closer to art through lodging.
