A signature restaurant in Huatan Township, previously operating as an herbal medicine shop. After the second generation took over, they creatively repurposed the traditional kiln used for baking herbs to make kiln-baked chicken. The vegetable garden near the shop is planted with many medicinal herbs such as Centella asiatica, Bidens pilosa, and Ganoderma lucidum, which are used in the kiln-baked chicken. The kiln-baked chicken from Wulong Herbal Medicine Shop is called 'Explosion Chicken' because the antibacterial paper wrapped around it explodes due to the heat during baking, hence the name. The Explosion Chicken is made with specially selected virgin black-boned chickens stuffed with traditional Chinese medicine and rice wine, then wrapped in 11 layers including heat-resistant plastic bags, aluminum foil, newspaper, red clay, and iron mesh. Finally, it is placed in a cross-shaped kiln and slow-cooked for 4 hours using acacia wood and longan wood. Unlike typical kiln-baked chicken which has less broth, Explosion Chicken has tender and flavorful meat. The broth is a rich and fragrant blend of essences from various Chinese herbs, rice wine, and the natural chicken soup from the black-boned chicken.
