After the war, friends occasionally visited the shop and asked to eat different flavors of snacks. Mr. Xu had a flash of inspiration and adopted the Western method of frying bread in a crispy box. He seasoned and thickened chicken liver, squid, and vegetables, then filled the hollowed-out crispy box to make "chicken liver bread" for guests. When a friend lifted the lid of the crispy box, they jokingly said it looked like a "coffin board." Finally, taking the joke seriously, he thought "coffin board" was a good idea and officially put up the "Coffin Bread" sign in the 48th year of the Republic of China (1959).
